Homeland
  Henry Butler
  Basin Street Records - 2004
A Review By Paule Pachter, December 27, 2004

Mention New Orleans Blues music to anyone and the name Henry Butler immediately comes to mind. Butler is squarely in a class with such great Crescent City piano men as Professor Longhair, Dr. John and Allen Toussaint. His honky tonk, soulful style and unmistakable baritone vocals make him a true standout. Butler who is frequently busy in the recording studio is probably on the road close to 300 days per year playing concert halls, major auditoriums and headlining Jazz clubs and festivals all over the world. Henry Butler’s music is like fine wine. You just don’t open a bottle and immediately take to it. You have to develop a taste for his emotional musical presentations. But once he touches you, you’re hooked.

Butler’s wide range of emotions run deep through his latest release entitled; “Homeland.” There’s enough sophisticated material contained on this CD to satisfy any discernable palate. Among the tracks that grabbed a hold of me were: “Jump to the Music;” “The Way We Loved;” “Some Iko,” and “I Stand Accused.”

Backing Henry Butler (piano, B3 organ and vocals) on this CD is a trio of great musicians and vocalists including Vasti Jackson (guitar, background vocals), Nick Daniels III (bass, background vocals) and Raymond Weber (drums, background vocals). “Homeland” earns a four-pepper rating. You can purchase this CD online directly from the record label at: www.basinstreetrecords.com or long onto Henry’s official website at: www.henrybutler.com.

We greatly appreciate your support and encouragement of The Zydeco Road. Working together, we can enhance the recognition that Zydeco music and its artists so greatly deserve on Long Island and within the Metro New York area.
