A CELEBRATION OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC
TO BENEFIT MUSICARES HURRICANE RELIEF

  VARIOUS ARTISTS
  Rounder Records – 2005
A Review By Paule Pachter, December 12, 2005

I guess it was to be expected that after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans this past August that the recording industry would appropriately respond with offers to help in the relief efforts. It should also come as no surprise to anyone involved in the Louisiana music industry that, Rounder Records would be one of the first record labels to respond in a creative and meaningful way. After all, Rounder Records is home to many of New Orleans’ great recording artists. The label has put together a compilation recording featuring some of New Orleans’ best Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Gospel and Mardi Gras Indian music available in their expansive vault and created a package to benefit hurricane relief efforts being coordinated by the Grammy Foundation’s MusiCares organization. What’s more significant is that 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this CD is being donated to MusiCares.

Among the artists and material featured among the 16 tracks are: Dirty Dozen Brass Band “Mardi Gras in New Orleans;” Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias “Meet de Boys on de Battlefront;” Jelly Roll Morton “I’m Alabama Bound;” James Booker “Lawdy Miss Clawdy;” Professor Longhair “Cuttin’ Out;” and Irma Thomas ”Second Line Medley.”

“A Celebration of New Orleans” is a “joyfully unruly collection that celebrates America’s greatest city, moving from second line brass band music and R&B to modern Jazz, Mardi Gras Indian music and gospel, spanning 65 years of recording. There’s a common thread that connects all these sounds – the ebullient, funky musical attitude that lets you know this music is from no other place on the planet than New Orleans.” You can purchase this three-pepper CD online from the record label at: www.rounder.com. You can learn more about MusiCares and make a donation by following the link at: www.grammy.com or at Amazon.Com.
