THE MAIN EVENT: LIVE AT THE MAPLE LEAF REBIRTH BRASS BAND Mardi Gras Records – 2004 A Review By Paule Pachter, December 23, 2005
The sounds of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and tubas are a staple of New Orleans brass band, Mardi Gras and Indian music. And, when it comes to the sound of street horns nobody defines the genre better than the Rebirth Brass Band. Simply put the Rebirth Brass Band have been an institution in the Crescent City for nearly twenty-three years and their music is some of the liveliest sounds emanating from New Orleans.
The Maple Leaf in New Orleans is one of the city’s premier music venues and the Rebirth Brass Brand has been holding court there for years. “The Main Event” features seven tracks recorded live at the Maple Leaf in 1998 and three additional tracks recorded in the studio just two years ago. Among the standout tracks guaranteed to get you in the mood for a good street parade are: “Blackbird Special;” “Just The Two of Us;” “I Feel Like Bustin’ Loose;” and “Carnival Time.”
The master musicians that make up the Rebirth Brass Band on this recording are: Phil Frazier (tuba); Keith Frazier (bass drum); Derrick Tabb (snare drum); Shamarr Allan (trumpet);Glen Andrews (trumpet); James Durant (saxophone); Tyrus Chapman (trombone); Derrick Tabb (snare drum); Stafford Agee (trombone); Derrick Shezbi (trumpet); and Herbert Stevenson (trombone).
