C. C. Adcock Louisiana Marquis Yep Roc Records - 2005 A Review By Richard Arfin, February 5, 2005 So I was out driving, listening to C.C. Adcock's latest, "Louisiana Marquis", and I was into it. I think I hear the music better when I'm in my car and the volume is pumped up. Anyway, I said to my friend in the passenger seat, "This cd is dripping with Louisiana."
She (who has never been there) says, "It's kind of dark."
"No," says I," not dark but like right after the sun sets...when things start to get thick."
"It kind out sounds swampy..."
"...sort of like vines drooping off the trees?"
"Yeah, I know...this music is humid!"I can't think of a better description for this FIVE PEPPER masterpiece. Damn, this record is HUMID! Like my shirt was sticking to me and it's 10 degrees outside. C.C. Adcock has taken the swamp mantle and created a very unique, evocative and enjoying set of music. If you loved Little Band O' Gold or The MauMau Playboys, this is yet another step in the development of his viewpoint, his métier.
It's a little cajun, a little zydeco, a little swamp, a little rock and a whole lot of alligator. In one sense, I was reminded of the sensations felt when Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights" plays...you can feel the environment. "Louisiana Marquis" is similar in that regard. Sometimes there's a reminder of Creedence, or John Lee Hooker or Clifton Chenier but it's always C.C. Some songs kick major ass. Others seem to creep under your skin like the warmth of a good gumbo. Maybe C. C. should retitle this as "Ambient Music for Louisiana Airports."
The personnel is a eclectic as the music. One number, "Stealin' All Day," goes back to session with the late Jack Nitzsche and it is superb. Dickie Landry, Pat Breaux, Stanton Moore, Doyle Bramhall II, Fred Staehle and Jon Cleary add their touches but they are simply perfect sidemen in the mix. "All 4 The Betta" and "Loaded Gun" are two favorites in a cd of standouts.
If you wanna kick back and pretend you're far from the snow and chill, grab a cold one and put this on. And prepare to get damp.
We greatly appreciate your support and encouragement of The Zydeco Road. Working together, we can enhance the recognition that Zydeco music and its artists so greatly deserve on Long Island and within the Metro New York area.
