DOMINOS
Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys
  Rounder Records – 2005
A Review By Paule Pachter, January 28, 2006

It might be hard to imagine just how Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys would be able to further capitalize on the success of their previous two CDs "Happytown" and "Bon Reve." Both releases for the Rounder records label were highly acclaimed by the music press including ZydecoRoad.com. But fret not! Because Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, who are one of the most consistently creative forces in Cajun music have found a way with their latest release for Rounder entitled "Dominos." Not only have they delivered a CD with 15 brilliant tracks, they've included a flipside DVD containing exclusive interviews and filmed performances of 4 of the songs featured on the CD. "Dominos" is a great package by a truly original American band singing in their native French language.

Among the standout tracks featured are: the title track; "Ardoin Medley;" "Bachelor's Life;" "Ramificajuns;" "River of Time;" and "Elise" (Steve's joyous instrumental celebrating the birth of his first child. You can feel his elation in the music). The band' s comprised of: Steve Riley (accordion, fiddle and vocals); David Greely (fiddle and vocals); Sam Broussard (electric and acoustic guitars); Kevin Dugas (drums and triangle), and Brazos Huval (bass).

Barry Jean Ancelet probably sums it up best in his great liner notes for the CD when he says that Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys are "addicted to excellence." The band continues to push the envelope and stretch traditional Cajun music to new limits. "Dominos" earns our highest 5-pepper rating and can be purchased online directly from the bands website at: www.mamouplayboys.com or at Amazon.Com.

your support and encouragement of The Zydeco Road. Working together, we can enhance the recognition that Zydeco music and its artists so greatly deserve on Long Island and within the Metro New York area.
