Behind The Levee The Subdudes Back Porch Records- 2006 A Review By Paule Pachter, March 16 , 2006
Once in awhile an album comes along with a great concept, exceptional material and wonderful packaging. Such is the case with The Subdudes latest release entitled, “Behind The Levee” on the Back Porch Records label. If this CD is any indication of what the Louisiana music industry and it’s artists are ready to release in the 2006 year, than we’re all in for some of the best recorded material to come out of the southwest in a long time. “Behind The Levee” was recorded before Hurricane Katrina decimated parts of New Orleans and certainly the title is timely. But it’s the music featured on the CD that tells the real story of The Subdudes connection to culture and social consciousness that paints some fantastic images for the listener.
The songs take you on a journey to the streets of New Orleans, into relationships and social statements, and across the human spirit. The Subdudes just don’t make music – they make a statement. And this is what makes “Behind The Levee” such an outstanding CD. Among the stellar compositions featured are: “Papa Duke & The Mud People;” “Next To Me;” “No Vacancy;” “One Word (Peace);” “Let’s Play;” and “Social Aid & Pleasure Club.”
The Subdudes are: Tommy Malone (guitars and lead voacals); John Magnie (accordion, pianos, organ and vocals); Steve Amadee (tambourine, percussions and vocals); Jimmy Messa (bass and rhythm guitar), and Tim Cook (bass, percussion and vocals). Joining them on select tracks are The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Rosie Ledet. Produced by Keb Mo who previously produced Lisa Haley’s “Talking to the Sun” CD, “Behind The Levee” earns our highest five-pepper rating. And, since John Magnie personally put a copy of this CD in my hand I’m sending you to The Subdudes official website at: www.subdudes.com to purchase your copy (also available at Amazon.Com
.)
