Black Cat Zydeco Joe Zydeco Gumbo Records - 2006 A Review By Paule Pachter, August 9 , 2006
Zydeco Joe Mouton is back with his follow-up CD to his 2001 debut release, “Jack Rabbit.” This time Joe is recording independently and he’s put together seven new tracks complete with that driving bass line and those incredible French Creole lyrics that he delivers so well. “Black Cat” is no less impressive than “Jack Rabbit” was five years ago. Zydeco Joe is a forceful musician. He plays the button accordion with great authority and his unique vocal style just grabs you. It’s not a great voice. It’s a raspy, bluesy voice with a wonderful accent that just grabs the listener. When Zydeco Joe sings he sought of talks to you. You feel like you’re on Joe’s front porch and he’s telling you these colorful stories that he’s put to music. And, the music is so good.
Among the tracks that impress me are: “Caroline Riding in the Buggy;” “Black Cat;” and “Why Can’t We Get together.” In addition to Zydeco Joe on accordion and vocals, he’s put together a true A-list of Zydeco musicians to back him up including Classie Ballou (bass), Cornelius Guidry (guitar), Joseph Edwards (scrubboard), and Kevin Menard (drums). “Black Cat” is an impressive follow-up to a great debut CD. The problem for me and the problem for the consumer is that this CD only delivers 7 tracks. After a nearly five-year wait, Zydeco Joe Mouton had ample time to deliver a full, 10-13 tracks. Instead, he releases what amounts to a CD sampler. “Black Cat” garners a sampler of three-peppers from us. If it contained more material it would have earned at least one more.
