Maurice Brown
  Hip to Bop
  Brown Records - 2004
A Review By Paule Pachter, August 28, 2005

New Orleans transplant Maurice Brown at age 24 is a quintessential Jazz trumpeter who has honed his craft and love for the music as a result of studying with he best the Jazz business has to offer. After years of formal musical education and stints as a supporting player with such Jazz greats as Lenny White, Curtis Fuller, Ellis Marsalis and Elvin Jones, he has released his first solo effort with his own quintet and the end result is pure enjoyment. The winner of the 2001 National Miles Davis Trumpet Competition, Maurice Brown’s style of Jazz is smooth and captivating even if you’re not a dedicated aficionado of the genre. Brown doesn’t just play the trumpet, he makes it sing and talk to you.

“Hip To Bop” provides an opportunity for Brown to musically express himself through eight brilliantly produced tracks. After spending a few years as a supporting player, Maurice Brown deservedly steps into his own spotlight with such magical numbers as: “Mi Amor;” “Anazao;” and “A Call For All Angels.”

Backing up the young man with the golden horn are five extremely talented Jazz musicians including Derek Douglas (tenor saxophone), Doug Bickel (piano, Hammond B3, wurly) Jason Stewart (bass), Adonis Rose (drums), and Bill Summers (percussion). Each of the members of the Maurice Brown Quintet are formally trained and deeply routed in the Crescent City’s Jazz culture. Put together a group of promising young musicians to carry forward the great Jazz tradition of New Orleans and you have the Maurice Brown Quintet.

“Hip To Bop” is an exceptional debut CD from one of New Orleans’ most promising Jazz trumpeters, which earns a four-pepper rating. You can purchase “Hip To Bop” and learn more about Maurice Brown from his official website at: www.mauricebrown.net or at Amazon.Com.
