River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs
  Rockin' The Zydeco World
  Independent - 2005
A Review By Paule Pachter, August 21, 2005

There’s a reason why the Connecticut based River City Slim and The Zydeco Hogs are in demand as one of the most sought after touring Zydeco acts in the northeast. It’s because they consistently deliver a great live show and know exactly what material to record in order to please the growing number of Zydeco music fans in the region. Their third release entitled, “Rockin’ The Zydeco World” keeps this successful formula going through fourteen wonderfully delivered covers and one original title track. “Rockin’ the Zydeco World” once again proves that River City Slim and The Zydeco Hogs have their fingers on the pulse of Zydeco and Cajun music.

Among the great renditions contained on this CD are: Step Rideau’s “Tee Black;” Keith Frank’s “Donne Moi Ca;” Zydeco Joe Mouton’s “Jack Rabbitt;” Dewey Balfa’s “Down In Texas Way,” and the original title track. The multitalented members of The Zydeco Hogs include: Peter Rost aka River City Slim (drums, vocals); Mark Thompson (accordion); Toad Eckert (guitar, vocals); Jon Mack (bass, vocals); and Robin Bean (rubboard, fiddle).

Although some of the vocals might be a bit out of range at times it’s not enough to distract from the overall package, which earns a three-pepper rating. The reason you buy a Zydeco Hogs CD is to keep the spirit of their exceptional live performance fresh in your mind until you’re fortunate to see them perform again. Based upon the commercial strength of the original composition “Rockin’ The Zydeco World” it may also be time for The Hogs to step away from their reliance on tested covers and take a chance at composing and recording more original material. Certainly, The Hogs are talented and successful enough to take a musical risk. You can purchase this CD online at the band’s official website at: www.ctlocal.com/zydecohogs.htm.

your support and encouragement of The Zydeco Road. Working together, we can enhance the recognition that Zydeco music and its artists so greatly deserve on Long Island and within the Metro New York area.
