SPYGLASS

SPYGLASS
  Alexandra Scott
  Independent - 2004
4 PEPPERS! A Review By Paule Pachter, October 9, 2005

Once in a while when you’ve listened to countless hours of Zydeco, Cajun, Swamp-Pop, Blues and Jazz emanating from New Orleans, you come across a true find. A rare treat and something so out of the New Orleans mainstream fare of music that you just have to sit up and take notice. Such is the case with “Spyglass” from Alexandra Scott. Somewhere between the influences of Lucinda Williams, Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morissette rests the infectious sound of Alexandra Scott. Her sound is a little bit folksy, sometimes angry, but mostly pleasing. Scott’s sound is at times pretty controversial on message. However, her lyrics and compositions are refreshing in a musical region where diversity is still greatly respected and encouraged.

It’s difficult to single out great tracks from the fourteen featured on “Spyglass” since they’re all impressive. Among my favorites are: “Please Don’t Wake Me;” “Good Girl;” “Dead End Street;” “So Far Away from Love;” “I Want a Boy;” “Jasmine,” and “All I Ever Do is Let You Go.”

Joining Alexandra Scott who takes the lead on vocals, guitar and keyboards are some great New Orleans based musicians including Mike Mayeux (bass, guitars, programming and vocals); Theresa Andersson (violin); Eddie Ecker (drums) Glenn Hartman (accordion); Peter Holsapple (guitar, bass, accordion, keyboards); David Fera (guitar); Tim Sommer (bass, guitar, keyboard, wind chime); and Billy Gaudin (keyboards).

If you’re not into some out of the mainstream techno-rock, folksy New Orleans music than “Spyglass” is not for you. But, if you approach this CD with an open mind and a craving for intelligent compositions from a very bright young artist than “Spyglass” is just what you’re looking for. The CD earns a four-pepper rating and can be purchased online at: www.musictoday.com or or at Amazon. To learn more about the artist, log onto her official website at: www.alexandrascott.com
