THE LAST BLOND ON EARTH Kirk Holder Redloh Records - 2002 A Review By Paule Pachter, September 22, 2006
Clearly when one thinks about New Orleans music you immediately associate Jazz, Zydeco, Cajun and the Blues. Rarely would you think of what I would term “soft-rock” or folk-rock. Well in the midst of all the Jazz, Funk, Zydeco, Cajun and Blues that dominate the Crescent City you’ll find Kirk Holder, a talented songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and outspoken social commentator with a beautiful CD that’s bordering on perfection. Holder’s sound is somewhat reminiscent in style to the Beach Boys, Jackson Browne, and maybe even a little Billy Joel. But, Kirk Holder can also stretch his musical bounds by infusing Jazz and hard rock into his repertoire. The end result is that “The Last Blond on Earth” is an eclectic blend of musical styles that superbly work on each and every track.
I found myself gravitated to such songs as: “You Remind Me;” “Wine and Cigarettes;” “Tell Me Honestly;” “Going Home;” and the title track. Holder is truly master of his own domain on this CD. He’s written and arranged each song, and engineered and produced the entire project. He selected several great musicians and background vocalists to accompany him, too many to mention in this review but clearly Holder and company worked some magic in the studio.
So, its no surprise that “The Last Blond on Earth” earns our highest five-pepper rating. The only issue for me is when and with what will Kirk Holder follow-up this 2002 gem. You can purchase this CD online directly from the artist’s website at: www.kirkholder.com.
We greatly appreciate your support and encouragement of The Zydeco Road. Working together, we can enhance the recognition that Zydeco music and its artists so greatly deserve on Long Island and within the Metro New York area.[ Artist of the Month ] [Sounds of The Road ] [This Ain't No Rest Stop ]
