Creole Bred Various Artists Vanguard Records - 2004 A Review By Paule Pachter, November 24, 2004
The most redeeming quality of “Creole Bred” is the presence of Louisiana’s zydeco artists providing the musical background on this project, especially Nathan Williams on the accordion.
With the exception of a wonderful ensemble recording of Clifton Chenier’s classic “I’m Coming Home” featuring Keith Frank, Rosie Ledet, Sean Ardoin and Nathan and The Zydeco Cha Chas, this tribute CD falls short on style and tribute. Certainly, zydeco artists and their songs deserve to be covered by popular mainstream artists like Cyndi Lauper, Tom Tom Club and blues legend Taj Mahal. But despite an impressive assemblage of artists, the only covers with any formidable substance performed by contemporary artists is the cover of Boozoo’s “Paper in My Shoe” by Michelle Shocked and Taj Mahal’s rendition of “Tit Monde.” Everything else on this CD misses the mark.
“Creole Bred” is a concept CD whose time has surely come. However, the album is very disappointing in terms of production and arrangement. If you’re curious enough to give this two-pepper CD a try you can purchase it online at: www.vanguardrecords.com.
We greatly appreciate your support and encouragement of The Zydeco Road. Working together, we can enhance the recognition that Zydeco music and its artists so greatly deserve on Long Island and within the Metro New York area.[ Artist of the Month ] [Sounds of The Road ] [This Ain't No Rest Stop ]
