THROWBACK
KERMIT RUFFINS with the REBIRTH BRASS BAND
Basin Street Records - 2005A Review By Paule Pachter – November 13, 2005
Once in a while it’s nice to travel back and explore your earlier roots and the things that inspired you to choose your own direction. That’s exactly what Kermit Ruffins has done with his latest CD entitled; “Throwback.” Although the title might imply that Kermit is taking a small step back to rediscover his musical past with The Rebirth Brass Band and its front man Phil Frazier, the CD is much more than just a throwback. It’s a celebration of Kermit Ruffin’s musical beginnings. The tracks recorded reflect all of his musical influences from Jazz (“It’s Later Than You Think” and “Happy Weekday Blues”) to second line funeral marches to traditional gospel (“Just A Closer Walk”). But it’s not all about Kermit. The Rebirth Brass Band truly shine on this shared celebration. Just listen to the great “Rebirth Medley featuring My Song, Pie Part 2, and Mexican Special.”
In addition to Kermit Ruffins (trumpet and vocals), the other great horn and percussionists featured on this CD include Philip Frazier (tuba), Keith Frazier (bass drum), Derrick Tabb (snare drum), Derek Shezbie (trumpet), Glen Andrews (trumpet) Stafford Agee (trombone), Corey Henry (trombone) and Vincent Broussard (tenor saxophone).
“Throwback” earns a three-pepper rating. It’s one of those genuine New Orleans party albums recorded by two artists who have come to symbolize what music in The Big Easy is all about. You can purchase this CD online directly from the record label at: www.basinstreetrecords.com or at Amazon.Com.
