BEAUBASSIN KERMIT VENABLE and BEAUBASSIN CAJUN BAND Sounds of New Orleans Records - 1996 A Review By Paule Pachter, November 23 , 2006
The sweet sound of the button accordion singing along with the chiming of the triangle, and those Acadiana French lyrics just blend together so well when placed in the hands of a seasoned artist like Kermit Venable, and his music producer and fiddle player Jonno Frishberg. The BeauBassin Cajun Band plays traditional Cajun music with a simple and spiritual flare. The material selected for this CD is compiled of songs that the band often performed in the dance halls of New Orleans, Lafayette and Northern Louisiana, and are meant to give the listener a sense of being in the venue. BeauBassin accomplishes their mission by presenting some high-spirited dance music, which is consistently pleasing.
Among the tracks that impress me the most are: “Watermelon Man;” “Soileau Two Step;” “Your Papa and Mama Threw Me Out;” “My True Love;” “Christmas With a Broken Heart;” “Nietsche’s Waltz;” and “Big A’s Two Step;” The members of the BeauBassin Cajun band are Kermit Venable (accordion and vocals), Jonno Frishberg (fiddle, background vocals and guitar), Bo Ledet (bass), and Dwight Galiano (drums). “BeauBassin” is lively CD steeped in Cajun tradition and packed with a unique variety of musical forms that earns a four-pepper rating.
